National campdrafting champion Lara Garlick will return home to Camden this week to tame some four-legged beasts.
She will compete in the Cumberland Campdraft Club's annual draft at the Bicentennial Equestrian Park on Sheathers Lane.
Garlick (nee Iddon), a former Camden High School student, won the women's final at the 2010 Australia Bushmen's Campdraft and Rodeo Championships in Barraba, near Tamworth, last month.
She said she loved coming home to compete every year and catch up with her mother and friends.
''For a few years I didn't do any good at the Camden draft because I was too busy socialising,'' she said.
''But now it's a bit more serious.
''It's great because Mum and my girlfriends all come down to watch.''
More than 400 riders from across the state have entered the competition which will begin on Friday at noon with the encouragement, junior and juvenile categories.
On Saturday, the novice and open events will be held 6.30am-5pm and then, on Sunday, the maiden and women's draft will begin at 7am.
On Saturday night under lights the top four competitors from each zone in the open event will take part in a fast-paced shoot-out to raise money for charity.
Garlick said it was easy for campdrafting to become an obsession.
''You can never perfect campdrafting, so no one can be perfect or the best every time,'' she said.
''You have to have a really good horse, good skills and then luck on the day to get the right beast.
''It really keeps you eager because there is no guarantee. We have a saying: 'You could be the rooster one weekend and a feather duster the next'.''
