Impersonator offers to console Michael Jackson fans

01 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
JASON Jackson's phone is ringing off the hook.

The Narellan Vale man, one of the country's most popular Michael Jackson impersonators, has been in frantic demand since news broke on Friday of Michael Jackson's death.

Jason Jackson had TV and radio reporters turn up at his doorstep on Friday and, when speaking to the Advertiser, his home phone rang constantly.

``I was just inundated,'' he said. ``My website crashed on Monday morning.''

Mr Jackson, now 35, has performed his tribute show The Jackson Experience since age10. The self-taught dancer and singer said Michael Jackson had had a profound effect on him from an early age he even formally changed his surname from Zamprogno to Jackson at age18.

``I had bone cancer when I was a child,'' he said. ``Michael helped me with that. By listening to his music, I survived. I was close to death. I said to my mum: `I want to be just like Michael'.''

It was Mr Jackson's mum who first told him the news that would shatter him.

``My heart sank,'' he said. ``I was horrified. I still am. This has affected everybody, not just me, but he's going to be remembered.

``The life he had was so extraordinary, you can't put it into words.

``Now I just hope the fans are going to be strong. I'm going to be there for them if they need me.''

Mr Jackson said he sat next to Michael at the Sydney premiere of the 1990 film Ghost and had an encounter with the star in 1996.

``He saw me on Kerri-Anne [Midday with Kerri-Anne on Channel Nine], his manager actually called me and I sat near him during his HIStory tour,'' he said. ``His kids looked over and he did a thumbs-up for me and said `good job'.'' Mr Jackson has transformed his property into a version of Neverland, complete with life-sized concrete animal statues made by his father, Armando.

He said he would record a tribute track for Michael Jackson in the coming weeks and was looking to do a show at Campbelltown RSL Club in July or August.
