Hotel in top 100 violent venues

16 Sep, 2009 11:15 AM
THE State Government will assist The Camden Hotel to strengthen its alcohol and security management, after the licensed venue was listed on the Government's top 100 violent venues list.

There have been 11 assaults at the venue, putting it at 97th on the list, along with 31 other venues.

Its ranking puts a requirement on the club to work with the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing to reduce alcohol-related violence.

The figures are the latest from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research and revised lists will be continued to be published each year on December 1 and June 1 using the previous year's data.

The Camden Hotel's licensee Dean Kondic said the hotel already went ``over and above'' what was necessary to make the venue safe, including limiting drinks, working with local police and hiring extra security. ``It's only a handful of people that seem to ruin it for everyone,'' he said.

``Eleven assaults in a year is less than one a month. We want our patrons to be in a safe environment and to keep coming back.''

Mr Kondic said the statistics had to be put into perspective.

``We're dealing with 500 people at any one time,'' he said.

``If you look at it from that perspective, it's not that bad.''

Gaming and Racing Minister Kevin Greene said the State Government had imposed the new conditions on the state's top alcohol hot-spots to tackle the increasing problem of alcohol-related violence.

``The latest data showing a reduction in the assaults at the top 48 venues reflects well on many venues, who we know are working to improve safety,'' he said. ``The data also shows the conditions themselves have been effective.''
