Dodgem cars in the aisles with trolleys on the back would help shoppers get around the new 14,000-square metre Bunnings Warehouse at Narellan, V8 Supercar champion Greg Murphy joked at the official opening of the store on Friday, November 27.
The four-time Bathurst winner joined Narellan residents for the celebrations, which included fireworks, children's entertainment and DIY workshops throughout the weekend.
``I've spent a lot of time in this area of NSW with Oran Park (raceway); I started racing here in 1994,'' he told the crowd. ``The area is expanding at an amazing rate; looking at the growth and change is phenomenal.
``It's fantastic to see Bunnings arrive here at Narellan. They have unparalleled support from communities around Australia.
``As in car racing, team work is what it's all about. The team work employed here, and the whole make up of the team in the Bunnings stores, is unparalleled.''
State Treasurer and Minister for State Development Eric Roozendaal, who was at the opening, said Bunnings had shown confidence in the State economy with its decision to open the Narellan store and with its 12-store expansion plans for NSW. He said it was an investment of more than $420 million which would create about 2000 jobs.
``Bunnings advises me the construction of these stores will support another 2400 construction and trade jobs,'' he said.
Bunnings Warehouse chief operating officer Peter Davis said the Narellan store was a $38 million investment and would deliver the lowest prices and widest range in home and garden improvement products. It's 120 employees would offer the best service, he said.
``We will become an integral part of the community,'' he said. ``Our team members live and work and raise their families in this community.''
Bunnings Warehouse Narellan is at 1 Porrende Street.
