Family `jailed' by damage

04 Nov, 2009 11:50 AM
A DISTRAUGHT Camden South family feel they're being held prisoner in their own home.

Lisa Wigan, her husband Sam and the five of their seven children living at home say they can't use their backyard due to construction problems caused by the neighbouring Bridgewater development.

The family bought the five-bedroom McCall Avenue property in January.

Mrs Wigan said the damage began on September 4: their swimming pool was blackened, ceilings were cracked and retaining walls were damaged.

Nothing had been done to rectify the problems despite her appeals to Wollondilly Council and the developers, Stockland.

``The internal damage and external damage (caused by the development) is quite significant,'' Mrs Wigan said.

``Our house has been severely affected and our lifestyle has been reduced from what was once enjoyable, to dangerous.

``They have no respect for what they're doing.

``You know there's construction going on which is fine, but they have no consideration of the damage it's doing.''

To top things off, the family says the 4000-square-metre property has now become infested with eastern brown snakes, one of the world's deadliest.

``We just can't live,'' Mrs Wigan said.

``We can't let the dog out, we can't let the kids out, we can't swim in our pool, we can't even walk outside without a shovel.

``The previous owner spent in excess of $100,000 and had the gardens landscaped to perfection, but the clay has damaged a lot of the plants put in.''

A Wollondilly Council spokesman said: ``The council is making sure that the construction work being done complies with the conditions of their approval and that environmental controls are being adhered to.''

A Stockland spokeswoman said Stockland and its contractors were aware of the Wigans' concerns.

``Stockland will continue to work closely with its on-site contractors and Mrs Wigan to resolve the matter as soon as possible,'' the spokeswoman said.
