SARAH Hilt is the picture of happiness.
Since surviving meningococcal disease in 2004, Miss Hilt has lived life with gusto.
The 24-year-old from Theresa Park has been buoyed by the immense community support she has received in the wake of losing both legs, her left forearm and the fingers on her right hand.
Last year, more than 600 people converged on Onslow Park for the inaugural Walk for Sarah a five-kilometre walk to Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park to raise money for Miss Hilt's rehabilitation.
The event is on again. Money raised at the June 21 walk will be used to buy a technologically advanced prosthetic hand.
``She can't wait to get one,'' said Miss Hilt's mother Gillian of the new hand that would offer her daughter individual movement in each finger.
``It would mean Sarah would be able to handle keys, and pick up money and other small objects.''
Mrs Hilt said the prosthetic was ``probably the biggest'' technological advance in recent years but it comes with a hefty price tag.
``It would cost $70,000 to buy and maintain,'' she said.
``It's a very exciting goal.''
About $50,000 was raised last year just enough to buy Miss Hilt a computerised leg that has given her a level of mobility she hasn't experienced since meningococcal disease ravaged her body almost five years ago.
The disease also impaired Miss Hilt's kidneys, so in November her father Gary donated one of his own.
The transplant's success gave Miss Hilt a new lease on life, her mother said.
``It has made an enormous difference to Sarah's life,'' Mrs Hilt said.
``She returned full-time to uni where she is studying economics and social science and Gary is very well too. He gave Sarah a great gift.''
Money raised goes to the Sarah Hilt Foundation, which has so far bought a wheelchair, prosthetics, made modifications to the family home and helped with university costs.
The 5km Walk for Sarah starts at 10am on June 21 at Camden Showground. Entry: $20; $40 family; $5 children and pensioners. Register at sarahhiltfoundation.org.au or on the day. Sponsorship forms are available.
