CAMDEN Tigers Soccer Club has received $1.2million from the federal government for a new clubhouse and ground lighting.
Federal Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Anthony Albanese joined Labor's candidate for Macarthur, Nick Bleasdale, at the club to announce the funding on Monday.
``Soccer is the fastest growing sport in Australia, provides great benefits for health and teaches young people how to interact socially,'' Mr Albanese said.
``This $1.2 million project will create local jobs in its construction phase and be a great benefit to the more than 600 players and volunteers, as well as local residents.''
The new clubhouse will include seating, a balcony, canteen, player changerooms, amenities and a referees' room.
New lighting will also be installed on two playing fields as part of the project.
Club president Glenn Hall said this was a great result for the club and the district.
``We are absolutely ecstatic and in shock,'' he said.
``This will be a great boost for our club and for the children in the district.''
Mr Bleasdale said the Camden Tigers was one of the oldest sports clubs in the area and was celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
``I met one of the mums during my election campaign and she said the president of the club wanted to meet with me and talk about the future of the club,'' he said.
``I wrote a letter asking if we could do something for this wonderful club and that's how this all started.''
