Mount Annan's own Orava String Quartet hope to go to Melbourne in July to compete in the Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition. All they need is the funds to get them there.
The quartet, which consists of siblings Sylwia, Daniel and Karol Kowalik from Mount Annan and Thomas Chawner, will perform at the Campbelltown Arts Centre this Saturday night to raise money for the trip.
The competition will see them perform two 50-minute sets, including classical and modern pieces, and will be broadcast live on ABC radio.
Orava will be up against five other quartets in the contest. It is held every four years and is a stepping stone toward the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.
Sylwia Kowalik, the eldest of her siblings, said she was excited for the competition.
``We always work a lot together,'' she said. ``We give every performance 100 per cent.''
Orava has just come back from a four-week regional residency, as part of a Young Australian Concert Artists program, in Bundanon.
``We did six to eight hours of quartet lessons a day, literally for a month,'' Sylwia said. ``It was insane.''
Last year, the quartet won a scholarship into the prestigious Banff Chamber Music Residency in Canada and they have performed at Sydney venues such as the City Recital Hall, the Conservatorium and Government House. They have also performed internationally in Shanghai, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and played for the Pope during World Youth Day 2008.
The Orava String Quartet will perform a fund-raising concert at the Campbelltown Art Centre on Saturday, June 20, 6.30pm. Tickets are available at the door; $25 adults and $10 concession. Details: 0413 245 115 or visit www.myspace.com/oravastringquarte t.
