Cheap, fast and freaky

IN 2007, a group of American university students decided to accumulate $11,000 and set out to make a feature-length horror movie.

Once it was seen by Steven Spielberg, studios rushed to grab the rights, and with the help of a few million dollars in marketing costs, Paranormal Activity has now made more than $100million in the US alone.

Paranormal Activity is the simple tale of a young couple who set up a camera in their house to try to discover the demonic force which seems to be haunting them night after night.

A psychic is sent in to investigate, but the evil force proves too nasty to be weeded out easily. This little-film-that-could has become the horror movie of the year. It was shot in a similar style to 1999's The Blair Witch Project and that is an obvious inspiration.

The absence of a musical score really heightens the tension throughout and makes the scary moments even freakier.

Luckily Paranormal Activity is only 80-odd minutes long so its effect is nice and punchy with a memorable final scene.

While you do get a few decent shocks, this film is hardly worth the $16 price for a Vmax screening.

Rating: 6.5/10
